A Cheriton, Virginia, man took and used his estranged wife’s EBT (electronic benefits transfer) card without her permission, then reported his crime to police the very next day, a Northampton County court heard.
Lorenzo Stith, 34, pleaded guilty last week in circuit court to the crime.
He admitted taking the card without her knowledge or permission and using it until the funds were exhausted, said Commonwealth’s Attorney Bruce Jones.
“He called police, reported his offense and made a full confession,” Jones said.
He has since repaid the loss, reported as $455.82, said Jones.
Defense attorney Brandon Wilder asked that Stith be allowed to remain on bond until his sentencing as he has a full-time job.
Judge W. Revell Lewis III ordered that a criminal history and sentencing guidelines be prepared and allowed Stith to remain free on bond.
